Why do Recycled Options Have a Lower Environmental Impact?

Recycled materials have a lower environmental impact because they reuse existing resources instead of creating new ones. These fibers are often made from fishing nets, carpets or plastic bottles, helping reduce:

  • Oil extraction.
  • Waste sent to landfills or oceans.
  • Greenhouse gas emissions.

According to our product expert, high-performance recycled fibers have evolved significantly in recent years. While they were once perceived as less durable or less compressive, they now offer performance comparable to virgin fibers in many swimsuit styles.

Which Swimsuit Fabric Offers the Most Support?

The fabric that provides the most support is one that contains a high percentage of elastane and offers 4-way stretches. Elastane is the fiber responsible for compression and shape retention. The higher its proportion, the more firmly the fabric hugs the body, supports key areas (such as the bust and waist), and maintains its structure during movement.

The percentage of elastane can provide an indication of a swimsuit's stretch, but it does not determine its level of support on its own. According to Bianca, support also depends on factors such as the quality of the elastane, knit tension, fabric weight, lining and overall garment construction. As a result, a swimsuit containing 20% elastane may offer less support than a style made with only 15%.

Understanding Fabrics: Durability, Quality and Performance

Swimsuit fabrics are designed to balance resistance, comfort and support in a particularly demanding environment (water, chlorine, salt, sun, friction). Their quality and durability depend mainly on several key factors.

What Damages Swimsuit Fabrics?

Four main factors accelerate fabric degradation:

  • Chlorine: breaks down fibers, especially elastane, leading to a loss of elasticity and support.
  • Heat: hot water and dryers weaken elastane and accelerate fabric deformation.
  • Sunscreen: Residues can damage fibers, causing stains or reduced flexibility.
  • Friction: Contact with rough surfaces (pool edges, sand, rocks) wears down the fabric and can cause pilling.

According to Bianca’s experience, many customers primarily attribute swimsuit wear and tear to chlorine. However, heat is often even more damaging to fabric fibers, particularly when a swimsuit is placed in a dryer or left damp in a warm environment after swimming. She recommends rinsing swimsuits in cold water after each use and laying them flat to dry in the shade to help significantly extend their lifespan.

What Makes a Swimsuit Fabric High-Quality ?

A high-quality swimsuit stands out for its durable materials, comfort, supportive fit and ability to maintain its shape and colour over time.

Fiber Quality vs.Blend Ratio

A blend ratio alone is not enough to guarantee fabric quality. The same composition can deliver very different results depending on the quality of the fibers used. Lower-grade elastane will lose its stretch and degrade more quickly, while higher-quality elastane, such as Lycra®, provides better resistance, elasticity, and long-term shape retention.

Why Does my Swimsuit Lose its Shape?

Loss of shape is mainly caused by the degradation of elastane. Exposure to chlorine, heat (hot water, dryers) and UV rays gradually weaken this fiber, reducing its ability to return to its original form. As a result, the swimsuit stretches out, sags, and provides less support.

Quality Indicators to Look for in Swimwear

  • Type of elastane: branded elastane (such as Lycra®) is often a sign of higher quality compared to generic elastane.
  • Fabric weight: a denser fabric (higher GSM) is generally more opaque, structured, and durable. Even if we don’t always think about it, Bianca reminds us that fabric construction is often what makes the biggest difference in a swimsuit’s overall quality. Two fabrics with exactly the same composition can perform very differently depending on their density, knit structure, compression, and finishing processes.

According to our Vice President of Design and Creative Strategy, there are two simple tests customers should try, either in-store or with swimsuits they already own at home:

  • Opacity Test: gently stretch the fabric; if it becomes see-through, it is likely lower quality.
  • Elastic Recovery Test: stretch and release the fabric; a good swimsuit should quickly return to its original shape without sagging.

  • Loss of opacity: the fabric becomes more transparent, showing that fibers have stretched and thinned.
